It became clear today that the Ramblers may need to lift our international profile! As we made our way up Mount Amos (440m), a steady stream of young overseas tourists offered plenty of encouragement — “you’re doing a great job!” While appreciated, we couldn’t help but think we should let them know this is all in a day’s work for a group that regularly tackles challenging tracks across Tasmania.

Our group thoroughly enjoyed this strenuous 3.6km return walk in Freycinet National Park, blessed with beautiful weather. As one of the granite peaks of the Hazards, Mt Amos is always popular — and especially so on a long weekend. The steep climb, with its mix of gravel, tree roots, rock scrambles and slippery granite slabs, certainly made us earn the reward.

And what a reward it was. From the summit, we were treated to sweeping views over Wineglass Bay, as well as Mt Graham, Mt Freycinet, and out to Schouten Island and Maria Island.

A well-earned lunch was enjoyed at the top, soaking in those spectacular vistas before heading back down to Coles Bay the same way. The group unanimously agreed on ice cream for afternoon tea — the perfect way to finish, taking in the coastal views at a more relaxed altitude.
